Transcription: The Berlin Wall was erected in 1961 by the East German authorities to divide East and West Berlin. Strict regulations governed movement either way. Then, in 1989, the wall came down. For the first time, Berliners could travel freely between the two sides. The border crossings were swamped as people took advantage of their newfound freedom. It was an historic event that symbolized the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe. Amidst the celebrations, a city was being reunited, although Germany has since realized the enormous financial cost of integrating East and West.
